Hey, Small Business owners! Let’s take a minute to talk about your Title Tags

Title Tags are HTML elements that are very important for good SEO and for drawing people in to your website. (Thus, the reason for the clever image of a lighthouse. Get it?) Anyway, Title Tags show up in search engine results pages as the blue, clickable headline of your website’s listing and they must be written well for your to get higher rankings and more clicks!

FIRST IMPRESSIONS MATTER
The Title Tag is often the very first thing people will see or read about your business. It can be, in every sense, a First Impression, even before someone visits your site! Because of this, they must be carefully written — because if you get the Title Tag wrong, you won’t get the clicks. And, if you don’t get clicks, you can’t keep rankings on Google for long.

Title Tags are one of the most powerful SEO items on your website. There’s no question about this —They can help you rank higher. We’ve seen situations where just the act of rewriting a poorly written Title Tag has moved a site’s ranking up 1 to 3 pages.

A GREAT TITLE TAG WILL DO THE FOLLOWING:

  • Contain your main keywords
  • Contain a geo-qualifier (like a city name) for local rankings
  • Display words in a certain order for optimal results
  • Tell a compelling story to entice a click using just 65 characters or less
  • Have a unique message that sets you apart from the competition
  • Define a web page from other pages on your site
  • Describe the contents of a website/page

EXAMPLE OF A POORLY WRITTEN TITLE TAG VS AN OPTIMIZED ONE:
Keyword Search is “BBQ restaurant in Chattanooga”

POOR
(Not good for SEO, Rankings or obtaining Clicks)
Joe’s Place – Home

OPTIMIZED
(Great for local SEO rankings. Makes you want to click (and hungry).
Mouth Watering BBQ | Chattanooga TN | Joe’s Pace

HERE’S THE OPTIMAL FORMATTING FOR A TITLE TAG:
Primary Keyword – Secondary Keyword – Brand (and/or location)

As you can see, there’s a lot that goes into writing good Title Tags, but it’s worth the effort!
